The Chicago Blackhawks are facing a significant setback this off-season with the news that star center Connor Bedard will be sidelined for approximately four months due to shoulder surgery. The 20-year-old's absence is projected to last until mid-November, raising concerns about the Blackhawks' ability to compete in the upcoming 2026-27 season.
This injury compounds an already disappointing off-season for the Blackhawks, who made questionable roster moves, including trading the fourth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Bowen Byram.
While Byram has a new contract worth $12 million per season, doubts remain about his ability to perform at an elite level. The only other notable additions to the roster include winger Jordan Greenway and defenseman Ian Cole, which do not inspire confidence for a team looking to improve its standing.
With $29.3 million in salary cap space, the team faces another long and challenging season, potentially finding itself near the bottom of the league standings as fans grapple with the reality of having not made the playoffs for six consecutive seasons.
This situation underscores that the Blackhawks still have years ahead in their rebuilding process before they can be considered serious contenders for the Stanley Cup.
