The Chicago Blackhawks' struggles this season can be traced largely to their performance in overtime and shootouts. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Blackhawks have a disappointing overtime record of 7-13, significantly impacting their playoff chances.

In comparison, the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks have performed better in these situations, with the Ducks at 15-4 and the Sharks at 12-6 in overtime and shootouts. This disparity has positioned the Ducks in playoff contention while the Blackhawks find themselves at the bottom of the standings.

The Hawks' overtime losses, which are already their most since the 2013-14 season, continued with a recent 3-2 defeat against the Nashville Predators. Coach Jeff Blashill noted that while overtime outcomes can seem like luck, the disparity in results is evident.

The Blackhawks' lack of elite forward talent beyond Connor Bedard may hinder their performance in three-on-three overtime, where star power is crucial. Additionally, their faceoff percentage of 46.6% is one of the lowest in the league, further complicating their ability to maintain puck possession during these critical moments.

Blashill emphasized that improving their roster could enhance their performance in overtime as well as in overall play, but they also need to hope for better luck moving forward. The current season's trends indicate that without significant improvements, the Blackhawks will continue to struggle in these crucial game-deciding situations.
