The Chicago Blackhawks' development camp has highlighted the promising talent of new prospect Samu Alalauri. Drafted in the third round, Alalauri, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound defenseman from Finland, expressed his excitement about joining the Blackhawks after being selected.
Alalauri's journey to the NHL will not be easy, as statistics show only 52% of third-round picks make it to the NHL, but he remains optimistic. He noted the importance of improving his defensive skills and looks forward to honing his game at UMass-Amherst, where he will play next season.
Alalauri caught the Blackhawks' attention during the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, with scouting director Mike Doneghey praising his skating ability and puck handling. Alongside other recent draft picks, including Xavier Villeneuve and Alexander Ivanov, Alalauri adds much-needed depth to the Blackhawks' defense prospect pool, which had previously been thin.
As he prepares for a collegiate career, Alalauri is also set to be mentored by fellow prospect Vaclav Nestrasil at UMass, further enhancing his development.
