Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour has called for increased video review in the NHL, emphasizing the challenges that referees face in making accurate calls during fast-paced games. He referenced a recent incident involving Ottawa Senators left winger Ridly Greig, who delivered a sucker punch to Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker in Game 4 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.
Although the punch went unpenalized during the game, Greig is set to have a hearing with NHL Player Safety. Brind'Amour criticized the current officiating process, stating, 'It is impossible to referee our sport live,' and suggested that introducing a review official could help eliminate erroneous calls.
He believes that technology, similar to systems implemented in other sports like Major League Baseball, could enhance officiating by allowing for quicker corrections on the ice. The call for more video review is supported by many in the hockey community, acknowledging that the speed of the game can lead to missed calls by on-ice officials.
Brind'Amour's remarks resonate with fans and analysts, highlighting a significant area for potential improvement in the NHL's officiating system.
