The Carolina Hurricanes celebrated their Stanley Cup victory with a record-breaking parade in Raleigh, drawing an estimated 150,000 fans, nearly a third of the city's population, as reported by The News & Observer.
Coach Rod Brind'Amour expressed his disbelief at the turnout, stating he was 'in shock' and 'speechless' after witnessing the overwhelming support from the fans. During the parade, captain Jordan Staal, who was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, shared his excitement, saying he was still blown away by the turnout.
Adding to the festivities, Nicolas Deslauriers signed a two-year contract extension worth $1.75 million on stage, further solidifying his role on the team. Deslauriers' new deal, which pays him $850,000 in the first year and $900,000 in the second, reflects the team's commitment to maintaining a strong roster following their championship win.
Brind'Amour, who has led the team to multiple playoff appearances and won the Coach of the Year award, emphasized the team's identity and competitive spirit in his speech during the parade. The event was not just a celebration of the championship but also a display of unity between the players and their dedicated fans, highlighted by the spirited 'storm surge' celebration that has become a signature of the Hurricanes' fan culture.
