The Carolina Hurricanes announced they have signed defenseman Alexander Nikishin to a one-year contract worth $3 million, resolving a prolonged contract stalemate that kept him out of training camp and the first 13 games of the season.
General Manager Eric Tulsky expressed relief at having Nikishin back, emphasizing the importance of his return as the Hurricanes look to build on their Stanley Cup victory. Nikishin, who was a restricted free agent, had not participated in training camp and had reportedly requested a trade earlier in the offseason, seeking a contract worth approximately $9 million per year.
His previous entry-level contract, which was worth $925,000, expired at the end of last season. The 25-year-old defenseman had a standout rookie season, finishing with 11 goals and 33 points, ranking second among NHL rookie defensemen in goals and points, and earning a spot on the NHL's All-Rookie Team.
In the playoffs, he contributed to the Hurricanes' championship run, although he recorded only one assist in 17 games. Despite his absence, the Hurricanes' defensive depth has been bolstered by the performances of Mike Reilly and Juuso Valimaki in Nikishin's stead, complicating his return to the lineup.
As a result of this one-year deal, Nikishin will be eligible for arbitration and offer sheets next summer if he plays at least ten regular-season games this season, giving both him and the Hurricanes options moving forward.
