The Montreal Canadiens made a significant move ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft by acquiring center Hunter McKown from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Luke Tuch. McKown, who is 23 years old, has spent the last three seasons with the AHL's Cleveland Monsters, where he recorded nine goals and 16 assists in 63 games last season, along with a goal and an assist in eight playoff games.
He also played 12 NHL games in the 2022-23 season, contributing two assists, but has not returned to the NHL since then. Standing at six feet one inch and weighing 192 pounds, McKown is expected to add depth and versatility to the Laval Rocket, particularly in the center position, which the team struggled to fill last year.
In contrast, Luke Tuch, who is 24 years old and was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, had nine goals and five assists in 68 AHL games last season and has yet to make his NHL debut, with no points in five playoff games.
Both players are restricted free agents, and this trade reflects the rebuilding focus of both the Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks as they enter the draft looking to improve their standing in the league.
This move highlights the ongoing strategy of acquiring players that can contribute to their respective AHL teams while also aiming for future NHL opportunities.
