The Calgary Flames have made a significant roster move by signing defenseman Simon Nemec to a five-year contract worth $36.25 million. This deal indicates the Flames' commitment to strengthening their defensive lineup as they prepare for the upcoming seasons.
Nemec, who was acquired from the New Jersey Devils last month, averaged about 19 minutes of ice time over 159 combined games since being drafted second overall in 2022. Flames management is also evaluating the future of forward Connor Zary, who has emerged as a potential trade target.
Zary, a former first-round pick, had a challenging 2025-26 season, posting 12 goals and 25 points in 74 games, but has shown potential in previous campaigns. Meanwhile, the Flames are gearing up for the 2026-27 season by preparing their prospects, with several players set to compete across different leagues.
Notably, the NHL will announce the 2026-27 season schedule on July 16, which will mark the final season at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Lastly, the Flames are assessing Hunter Brzustewicz's future with the team, considering options for his development as they strengthen their defensive core, especially after acquiring Jake Middleton.
