The Calgary Flames have made significant strides in enhancing their future prospects by selecting nine players during the 2026 NHL Draft, emphasizing a commitment to rebuilding. Four of these selected prospects have been named to the United States roster for the World Junior Summer Showcase, with the Flames boasting the most representation of any NHL team.
Defenceman Maceo Phillips, a third-round pick in 2025, is set to join the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers for the upcoming season, which is seen as a crucial step in his development ahead of joining the University of Minnesota.
Additionally, Flames prospect Jakob Leander was selected by the Calgary Hitmen in the CHL Import Draft, providing him with opportunities in North America. As the Flames reassess their roster, they are actively exploring trade options to enhance their competitiveness, particularly looking to move out several forwards and defencemen who are currently under contract, signaling a shift towards giving younger players a chance in the NHL.
The Flames are expected to target veteran forwards like Blake Coleman and Connor Zary for potential trades, aligning with their goals for a successful rebuild.
