The Calgary Flames have signed 20-year-old goaltending prospect Kirill Zarubin to a three-year, entry-level contract, set to take effect in the 2026-27 season. Zarubin, selected in the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft, had an impressive season in the MHL, posting a 26-13-3 record with a 2.17 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage for AKM Tula.
The Flames aim to improve their goaltending depth with this signing, as Zarubin's performance in the playoffs also showcased his potential. Meanwhile, in a significant development for the franchise, former Flames head coach Bob Hartley has announced his retirement after a storied coaching career, which included leading the Flames to a playoff berth and winning the Jack Adams Award in 2015.
Hartley, who also notably coached the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup victory, has spent the last few years coaching in the KHL. Additionally, several Flames players have excelled at the 2026 IIHF World Championship, with Team Canada and Team Finland securing victories in recent games, showcasing the talent within the Flames organization.
Prospect Ethan Wyttenbach, selected 144th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, has ambitious goals for the upcoming season, aspiring to join the Flames after another season at Quinnipiac, where he led the nation in scoring with 25 goals last year.
These developments signal both a focus on nurturing young talent and a reflection on the legacy of past leadership within the Flames organization.
