The Buffalo Sabres have announced the recall of Anton Wahlberg from the AHL's Rochester Americans as they prepare for their upcoming game against the New Jersey Devils. Wahlberg, a 20-year-old center and the 39th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, has recorded 25 points in 47 games this season.
His call-up comes as the Sabres navigate injuries to other players, including leading scorer Tage Thompson, who is attending a White House ceremony following his gold medal victory with Team USA. Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff indicated that Thompson's availability is uncertain due to his busy schedule, while also confirming that some injured players, like Josh Norris and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, are expected to return.
Wahlberg's NHL debut is possible, although he may remain as a healthy scratch depending on the situation with other players. The team currently occupies the top wildcard position in the Eastern Conference, aiming to solidify their playoff chances as they resume play after the Olympic break.
