The Buffalo Sabres are actively pursuing a trade for Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, with discussions ongoing since late June. The Sabres had a solid goaltending performance last season, ranking third in team save percentage, with goalies Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Alex Lyon, and Colten Ellis all achieving save percentages of .903 or higher.

Despite this success, the opportunity to acquire a premier goaltender like Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, remains enticing. According to The Hockey News, the Jets' general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, previously rejected a trade offer from the Sabres, indicating that both teams are still negotiating the appropriate package.

Hellebuyck's recent performance included a 23-23-11 record and an .895 save percentage, signaling a down year, but many believe this was due to the Jets' struggles as a team. Elliotte Friedman from The Leafs Nation noted that while the Sabres are the frontrunners, other teams like the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche are also in the mix.

Hellebuyck's contract, which runs for five more years at an average annual value of $8.5 million, includes a full no-movement clause, complicating the situation. The Sabres are trying to balance the potential of acquiring Hellebuyck while also considering the talent they would need to part with to make a trade feasible, especially after initial offers fell short.

If the Sabres succeed, Hellebuyck could enhance their playoff chances significantly, positioning them among the top contenders in the Eastern Conference alongside teams like the Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning.

However, if negotiations do not yield a trade, Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff has confidence in Luukkonen, who is under contract for three more seasons at a manageable $4.75 million.
