The Buffalo Sabres are experiencing a surge of optimism following their breakout season, which ended a lengthy playoff drought. According to Sabres assistant general manager Josh Flynn, the team's successful journey, which included a remarkable turnaround with a 39-9-5 record over their final 53 games, marks just the beginning of their ambitions.
Flynn expressed confidence in the organization's trajectory, stating, 'The best is yet to come' as they aim to build on last season's success and ultimately pursue the Stanley Cup. The Sabres captured the Atlantic Division title and advanced to the playoffs, where they reached the second round for the first time since 2007.
Despite some offseason disappointments, including the departures of Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram, the franchise is focusing on the growth of its young talent. Prospects like Radim Mrtka, the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, are expected to contribute significantly to the team's future.
Tim Kennedy, the club's director of player development, highlighted Mrtka's potential, emphasizing his first-pass ability and shutdown defense capabilities. However, Mrtka's recent performance suggests that his path to the NHL may take longer than anticipated.
Meanwhile, the Sabres are preparing for another season with a three-goalie rotation. Goalie Alex Lyon noted the competitiveness and support among the trio, which contributed to the team's strong save percentage and goals against average despite the challenges of managing multiple netminders.
While the Sabres have yet to finalize their goaltending strategy for the upcoming season, the hope remains that they can build on their recent success and continue their upward trajectory in the highly competitive Eastern Conference.
