The Buffalo Sabres have garnered national praise for their strategic off-season moves, particularly the signing of defenseman Olen Zellweger to a three-year deal with a $3.1 million average annual value (AAV).
Analyst Harman Dayal from The Athletic highlighted this move as a great addition, emphasizing Zellweger's potential to become a top-four defenseman, especially after a solid season with the Anaheim Ducks where he scored seven goals and 15 assists in 76 games.
Additionally, the Sabres' prospect pool remains robust, with evaluations showing depth and potential impact players like Konsta Helenius and Daxon Rudolph, who was acquired as part of the trade involving Bowen Byram.
Byram, who was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, sought a role as a first-pairing defenseman, leading to a six-year contract extension worth $12.5 million AAV. The Sabres also continue to explore a trade for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, with discussions on potential trade assets including Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who had a career year and is under contract for three more seasons.
However, the talks around Hellebuyck have been complicated, as the Winnipeg Jets initially sought the Sabres' fourth overall pick in negotiations, which led to a standstill. This off-season has set the stage for the Sabres to contend seriously in the upcoming NHL season, balancing their immediate needs with the development of their young talent.
