The Buffalo Sabres are taking significant steps toward building a championship-caliber team following their return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 14 years. According to NHL analyst Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic, the biggest separator between the Sabres and true Stanley Cup contenders is the need for a forward who can allow Tage Thompson to play in a more suitable role as a top-sidekick.

Luszczyszyn suggests that acquiring a high-end talent like Robert Thomas from the St. Louis Blues or Dylan Larkin from the Detroit Red Wings could elevate the Sabres into the league's elite. If those players are unattainable, pursuing a bounce-back season from Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks might be a worthwhile risk.

The Sabres currently have a surplus of forwards, with 14 under contract, and this number is expected to grow to 15 with restricted free agent Peyton Krebs receiving a qualifying offer. General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen will need to make moves to clear the logjam and possibly trade an asset like Jason Zucker, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The organization is focused on making a blockbuster trade to secure a top-line center, as this is seen as a crucial piece for their future success. Additionally, the Sabres' defense, featuring Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, and Mattias Samuelsson, along with potential plans to acquire goalie Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, positions them well for a championship push starting in the 2026-27 season.

However, it remains to be seen if such trades will materialize over the coming months, as the Sabres aim to fill the biggest hole in their lineup.
