Sabres executive optimistic post-playoff breakthrough

The Buffalo Sabres have ended their NHL playoff drought, which lasted 14 years, with assistant general manager Josh Flynn expressing optimism about the team's future. Flynn stated, 'We're excited about not just this year, but about what the next five or six years are going to hold for this organization.' Last season, the Sabres finished with a record of 39-9-5 over their last 53 games, capturing the Atlantic Division title and securing 109 points, the fourth-most in the league.

They advanced to the second round of the playoffs, where they faced the Montreal Canadiens, losing in a Game 7 overtime thriller. Flynn emphasized the team's potential, highlighting the expectation for internal growth from young players like Jiri Kulich, Konsta Helenius, and Zach Benson.

Despite the departures of Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram, the Sabres are relying on the development of their emerging talent and maintaining depth through a strong farm system. Flynn indicated that the organization is not making panic moves for overpaid veterans, showing confidence in their current roster, even as the Eastern Conference becomes more competitive.

He noted, 'We all walked out of there saying, 'Look, we were good enough to go right up against Carolina and give Carolina a run for their money.'' Flynn also acknowledged the risks associated with their conservative approach, given the highly competitive nature of the Atlantic Division and the slim margin for error for playoff contention.

Overall, the Sabres are focused on building toward sustainable success under general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, whose goal has been clear since taking over in December.
