Bruins Discuss Future Captaincy After Bergeron

The Boston Bruins are contemplating their next captain following the departures of franchise legends Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. In a conversation with New England Hockey Journal's Evan Marinofsky, head coach Marco Sturm mentioned the challenge of finding a leader that meets the high expectations set by previous captains.

Sturm highlighted that the next captain does not need to mirror the styles of past leaders, emphasizing that players like David Pastrnak, a front-runner for the role, possess different leadership qualities.

Sturm noted, 'If you look at our guys now, I think David, he's a totally different leader as a Bergeron or Chara. Totally different. Which is absolutely fine.' Charlie McAvoy is also a leading candidate for the captaincy, alongside Pastrnak.

The Bruins have been without a captain since March 7, 2025, when Brad Marchand was traded to Florida. Sturm expressed a desire to eventually name a captain, stating, 'End of the day, I would like, at one point, I don't know when, I like to have a captain.' This leadership transition comes as the team looks to build on a successful season, with a strong leadership group already in place, including Hampus Lindholm and Jeremy Swayman, who have been recognized for their contributions.

The Bruins' leadership dynamics will be crucial as they move forward into the new season, aiming to establish a strong culture and connection within the locker room.
