The Chicago Blackhawks have officially re-signed prospect goalie Drew Commesso to a two-year contract with an $875,000 salary-cap hit, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. This signing marks the first of four re-signings for the team, including notable restricted free agents like Connor Bedard and Kevin Korchinski.

Commesso, who will turn 24 later this month, has spent the last three seasons with the Rockford IceHogs, posting a .906 save percentage and a 2.75 goals-against average. He earned his first NHL win with a shutout against the Nashville Predators last January and continued to show promise with another win in March.

According to The Hockey Writers, the Blackhawks view Commesso as a key component of their goaltending depth, especially with his new contract providing him a clearer path to the NHL. General Manager Kyle Davidson expressed confidence in Commesso, stating he is expected to compete for a roster spot during training camp.

Despite the presence of incumbent backup Arvid Soderblom, whose job security is uncertain following a season with an .880 save percentage, Commesso is positioned to challenge for the role. Notably, Commesso’s contract will transition from a two-way to a one-way deal in the 2027-28 season, indicating the organization's long-term plans for him in the NHL.

Head coach Jeff Blashill praised Commesso's demeanor and performance during his emergency starts last season, emphasizing the importance of competition in training camp for all goalies involved.
