The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed 22-year-old defenseman Pavel Mintyukov to a five-year contract extension worth $36 million, avoiding potential complications from an offer sheet. This signing comes amidst a turbulent offseason for the Ducks, particularly following Leo Carlsson's signing of a five-year, $90 million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers, which could have left the Ducks with limited salary cap space to maneuver.
According to ESPN, Mintyukov's deal carries a $7.2 million average annual value against the salary cap, and although it exceeds his expected market value, the Ducks needed to secure him amid fears that other teams might pursue him with offer sheets as well.
Mintyukov has recorded 69 points in 204 games over three NHL seasons, including a career-high eight goals last season. The Ducks, under general manager Pat Verbeek, are now faced with a tight salary cap situation, especially with restricted free agent Cutter Gauthier expected to demand a high salary after his breakout season.
Verbeek's past negotiation strategies have drawn criticism, as they have led to a challenging cap situation, necessitating potential roster changes to accommodate the new contracts while maintaining a competitive team moving forward.
