The Anaheim Ducks and General Manager Pat Verbeek are facing a critical situation as they navigate salary cap constraints. With just three days remaining until a pivotal deadline, the impact of an explosive offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers for Leo Carlsson has complicated the Ducks' offseason plans.

Following the offer sheet, the Ducks avoided disaster by securing a five-year contract extension for young defenseman Pavel Mintyukov at an average annual value of 7.2 million. Mintyukov's extension, which came after he posted 22 points in 73 regular season games, was initially expected to be more team-friendly but was influenced by the threat of another offer sheet.

Additionally, the Ducks announced a two-year contract extension for Tyson Hinds worth 900,000 per season, despite his limited offensive production. Currently, the Ducks have just over 9 million in cap space, but they still need to negotiate an extension for Cutter Gauthier, who scored 41 goals last season.

Gauthier’s market value is estimated to be between 7.8 and 8.5 million, making it difficult for the Ducks to fit him within their cap space. The Ducks may need to make roster moves, potentially trading players like Frank Vatrano, who has a 4.5 million cap hit, or considering upcoming unrestricted free agents like Alex Killorn and Chris Kreider, to retain Gauthier.

With the clock ticking down, the Ducks face a decision that could significantly impact their future, balancing cap management with the need to retain their best players. The pressure is mounting as Verbeek's decision looms over the franchise's direction.
