Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is eyeing the monumental milestone of 1,000 career goals in the upcoming NHL season. According to The Hockey News, Ovechkin is currently 71 goals away from this target and has expressed interest in potentially extending his NHL career beyond the 2026-27 season.
Ovechkin, who is 40 years old, is entering this season 27 games shy of 1,600 and 13 points away from 1,700. He has scored 32 goals in the past season, an average of 0.47 goals per game over the last three seasons.
If he maintains this scoring rate, it would take him roughly 152 games to reach 1,000 goals. However, if his production drops to a 0.39 goals per game average, it could take 182 games, extending beyond two seasons.
Ovechkin's decision to return to the Capitals was influenced by his desire to compete for another Stanley Cup, mentioning that last season was emotionally challenging for him. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis emphasized the importance of Ovechkin returning for the right reasons, focusing on rebuilding a competitive team.
General Manager Chris Patrick has made significant roster changes, acquiring players like Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, and Boone Jenner, which should provide Ovechkin more support on the ice. Ovechkin expressed excitement about the potential of the team and reiterated his commitment to help the Capitals win a championship.
